Vulcano - Five Skulls and One Chalice
"Five skulls and one chalice" could well be regarded as a honored follow up to "Tales from the Black Book", one of the best albums released by any band returning to activity, not only because of its melodic construction, but also (and mainly) because of its odd sonority and crafted musical proposal. Masterly cruising through the furious seas of a deadly and vicious Death/Black Metal, together with a Thrash Metal true to the guts, "Five skulls and one chalice" delivers nine unreleased blows, all of them worthy of attention, none of them capturing more the ears than the other, proving that VULCANO is not only renewed, but also updated, and able to bring together old and new fans alike.
The new album, Serpent, is true to its old school death metal roots, being a true insane and furious soundtrack to Armageddon. The band's unmistakably and personal characteristics have been brilliantly used by musical producer André Cabelo (Engenho Estúdio) and by graphic artist Fernando Lima. The album's themes include dreamy images in "House of Betsaida"; religious protest in "Antichrist"; the realization of human nature in "Betrayer"; and mankind's lack of direction in World of Nobody. It can already be considered a classic album of Brazilian death metal.
The band Cirrhosis, from the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, completed 20 years in 2008. Co-founded by Wagner "Antichrist" (Sarcófago), in 1988, its current line up is: Fernando (drums), Emerson Leik (bass), Flavio (vocal), Henrique (guitar) and Guarato (guitar). Cirrohsis has just released its new album, "Drinks From Hell", which is made of the most pure old school Death Metal, their trademark since the beginning. "Drinks From Hell" presents a more direct sound, reviving its roots with a raw, old school style that has been an influence to the band since the split-album "Alcohol Rules" (1991) and the full length album "Alcoholic Death Noise" (2002). It reaches such themes as restrained hatred (Hate Dreams), religion as a false promise of salvation (Invasion of the Faith), alcohol as a means of pleasure and decadence (Alcoholic Ritual) and the inner hell of human race (Drinks from Hell).
The band Defacer has a memorable history in the Brazilian Death Metal Scene, exactly where the roots of the national metal are considered more radical. Its strength since their first records portrays their aversion to Christianity, and the consequent insanities that affect all the followers of this great evil. The band was founded in 1993, and its current line up is Incredulous Cataclysm (vocal, keyboards), Messenger of Darkness (guitar), Guardian of the Forest (drums), Lord Ayperos (bass) and Mort (guitar). The album comprises seven Black Metal compositions, all of them obscure, strong and ideologically engaged, with many heavy and somber moments and an extremely powerful vocal performance. Recorded at DM Studio, the artwork was designed by Drowned's Fernando Lima.
