Cogumelo was first established as a rock store, in 1980, and began to host the newborn metal label Cogumelo Records in 1985. In this year the label recorded its first album, the split LP (one side for each band) from Overdose and Sepultura. The album Sepultura – Bestial Devastation and Overdose – Século XX was recorded at JG Studios using only 08 tracks, and it was so successful that it surprised even the own label. Each side of the split LP originated different CD releases. In 1986 Cogumelo decided to release Sepultura’s first full length LP, Morbid Visions, recorded using 16 tracks at Vice-Versa Studio, São Paulo. In the same year the label produced the compilation Warfare Noise I, including the death metal bands Sarcófago, Chakal, Holocausto and Mutilator. By the end of the year, Sepultura was the label’s main character, being praised by many specialized magazines around the world.

++ INTERNATIONAL LICENSING
In 1988 Roadracer, new North American branch of the Dutch label Roadrunner, hired Sepultura. Another huge international success is the band Sarcófago, which albums Rotting and The Laws of Scourge were released in Europe by the label Music For Nations.

++ DISTRIBUTION IN BRAZIL
Cogumelo has always looked for distributing its titles along those of another independent Brazilian labels. Part of its catalogue has a nationwide distribution by MNF (Curitiba based distributor).

++ DISTRIBUTION IN USA
Cogumelo is now distributed exclusively by Relapse Records in USA territory.

++ PROMOTION
Cogumelo has produced many videos, including those of the bands Tianastácia, Sarcófago, Panic, DeFalla, Os Baratas Tontas, Overdose, Siecrist and Pato Fu, all of them included in Brazilian MTV’s programs. The main targets of the label’s promotional efforts remain the specialized magazines and fanzines.

++ ARTISTS
The label hosts today artists of many musical styles, ranging from various types of metal up to hardcore and punk, which mirrors the true underground music. Cogumelo is proud to be responsible for the success of such bands as Sepultura, Sarcófago and many others. Now, the label is releasing Drowned’s death/ thash metal, Lustful, Impurity, and Sarcasmo heavy metal.

++ CATALOGUE
Cogumelo has more than 100 titles in its catalogue, 50 of them already released in the CD format. Its main goal now is to release in the CD format, through the Cogumelo Remasters series, many of its original classic albums.
